The film festival of Las Vegas anticipates over 25,000 viewers of this year's selected films.

Over 25,000 people are expected to attend CineVegas, the annual Las Vegas film festival, now celebrating its tenth anniversary. Over 25 films will be shown, including the world premiere of “Dark Streets,” and a special charity screening of “Get Smart,” to be held on Sunday, June 15.

The festival opens on Thursday, June 12, with a screening of “The Rocker,” starring Rainn Wilson and Christina Applegate. On Monday, June 16, there will be a one-night-only exhibition of a site-specific installation featuring an animation piece by international artist Takashi Murakami. His ten-minute film, “Planting the Seeds,” acclaimed by critics, will be shown twice that night. The festival will continue until it closes on June 21with a showing of “The Great Buck Howard,” starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, and Emily Blunt.

Board Members

Actor Dennis Hopper is Chair of the Creative Advisory Board for CineVegas. He has held the position since 2004, after winning the festival’s Marquee Award in 2003. In previous years, he has given awards to CineVegas honorees such as Holly Hunter, Dean Stockwell, Julian Schnabel and Robin Wright Penn. Also involved are Robin Greenspun, President; Trevor Goth, Artistic Director; and Mike Plante, Associate Director of Programming.

An Illustrious History

CineVegas got its start in 1998, when “an enthusiastic group,” made up of “movie/art lovers, independent filmmakers and film industry veterans” got together and made it a reality. Bally’s allowed its showroom and convention halls to be used for screenings. The first year, the films showed were those independent films that had won acclaim at other film festivals.

In 2007, CineVegas welcomed celebrities George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and other stars of Ocean's 13, which had it's premiere in Las Vegas.

Marquee Award Winners

This year’s Marquee Award winner is Anjelica Huston. A Half-Life Award will be given to Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, Viggo Mortensen and Sam Rockwell. According to a press release, the honorees will participate in moderated conversations, open to the public, on June 20 an 21. Also being honored is actor James Caan, who will receive the Vegas Icon Award. The award is given to “an actor who

embodies the spirit of Las Vegas and who has delivered memorable performances in films and shows set in the city.” This award will be given on Friday, June 20, in a ceremony at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

Past Marquee Award winners include Audrey Hepburn, Helen Mirren and Dustin Hoffman. Other honorees include Sir Ben Kingsley, Christina Ricci and Samantha Morton.

In addition to the full-length films, there will be two programs of shorts. “The Reveille of Reverie,” with featured shorts, and a special program of shorts by Las Vegas filmmakers, will be shown at least two times each.

Tickets to CineVegas are $10 per film. Passes are available.
